I never tire of shots of the space dock. Still the best space dock in all the films. The only one close was the one holding Enterprise B in the opening of Generations(and Knoll was heavily inspired by Trumbull's fx from TMP for that film, even down to the look of the photon torpedoes.

Never knew the drydock was so red as per those photos it always looked a pink washed out red & brown on the big screen & home video. I am old enough to have seen STMP on the big screen back in 1980 when it first came out to this day there has not been a better or more awe inspiring sequence in a Star Trek movie than when the Enterprise is in space dock for the travel pod tour :D

RIP Morgan Woodward he sadly passed away a few days ago & was so memorable in his first TOS episode Dagger of The Mind but also had a long career in mainly westerns on tv :e_sad:

I like that the first Trek film takes its time too in these kind of moments. I wonder if the change in color of the model was due to some lighting of it or maybe the change came from the composite on the optical printer?
Apparently, Abel wanted to place a camera inside the dock to shoot stuff so one side of the dock swung out so a camera could fit inside but Trumbull determined they didn't need to do so. This is from that Return to Tomorrow book.

I can only imagine how great the entire film looked on the big screen. :eek:

What in the world is going on with Discovery? It is being sued by the developer of a video game he claims that the Discovery creators "borrowed" from.

WTF? Why would these new Trek people have to steal from anybody for their show when you have 50+ years of your own lore to pilfer? Why steal from others?

My only real complaint is I am tired of these dark interiors. One thing Beyond did great was this kind of Federation space station utopia for the Yorktown. Same for STTMP's Earth. I miss that optimistic vision of the future. The interiors here look like leftover sets from Enterprise and DS9. Daaarkk. Interiors must be dark in order for our show to be...daarrrk.

Wait, that is the Director's Cut. That is a mixed bag for me. Love some of the new shots they did clarifying V'ger threatening Earth but some of the vfx replacement shots aren't an improvement.
Seeing STMP 4K with HDR is enough for me I did not care for the Directors Cut at all but have to respect its close to Wises's original vision (all the new FX for instance were based on the original storyboards).

Plus new viewers young & old being able to see the Enterprise on the big screen once more with that gleaming pearlescent paintjob & Jerry Goldsmith's score is sure to bring some new fans for these TOS movies :wink:

Perhaps @ Kmart :) can get the gig to tell us about the new 4K VFX effort when they do this (the rumour is the official announcement is a few weeks away @ the big Trek con in August) hence why they have been allowed to talk about it now.

With Paramount though its always been about the money so until they announce its not quite official!

The tone looks terrible yet more Discovery style PC nonsense wrapped around a few cameos from 1990s TV Trek & TNG :roll:

maybe more re-merger-related with cbs and par? Not sure that a grand unified trekverse is ideal, esp under Kurzman of all people.

for years I said I thought a good trek movie could be made by a nonsf guy, in the vein of Meyer on ST TWOK, like the writer/director of STATION AGENT, then I found out he was the original director on GoT and his stuff was all tossed & reshot, so grudgingly I gotta say, what do I know?

Picard trailer looked okay, how much of it was for shock value I dunno, half of it might be holodeck stuff for all we know.

In other news from SDCC, Orville is moving to Hulu and Seth said this might delay the next season for a year and a half(til end of 2020). Uh, why? That seems like a helluva gap.

There are rumors that Kurtzman has been sidelined in favor of new creators for the Picard show and future projects. But, he was sitting right next to Stewart on the Picard panel at SDCC so I'm not sure that is accurate.

ORVILLE news has me semi-bummed, I admit, though Hulu at least puts (put? past tense?) their stuff out on Blu, which would mean 2-1/2 years till I get to see any new eps.

Got Hulu's HANDMAID s1 for two bucks on blu at a pawnshop, and am lusting after THE LOOMING TOWER, which I watched 3 eps of through a special screening link, and desperately want to see it all, but not for twenty bucks. Except for the occasional TWILIGHT TIME must-have and a few Criterions (ALL THAT JAZZ is definitely worth the upgrade just for how the colored lights pop in the finale), I haven't let myself pay full price for a movie in forever. Criterion is going to get money out of me for LOCAL HERO and MATEWAN later this year, and I'm probably going to be selling film art books and/or my complete set of THE SCALPHUNTERS on DVD (after I finish watching them) to offset those buys. I still only have CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT on VHS -- same for LOOKING FOR MR GOODBAR, not like there's another choice with the latter -- but I think those are the only VHS I still have, outside of my wedding video (hope there is no way to increase resolution on that when transferring to dvd, because my fly was open for the whole ceremony.)

Just realized there was no trek content above, sorry. But, sos long as I'm screwing that up, I oughta mention that I haven't raved about TWIN PEAKS yet this week. Started rewatching the third season again this week (sixth time through, not counting the number of times I've watched episode 8, which probably numbers a couple dozen by now) and it is just sublime. What is weird is how I remember the tension I felt during the first viewing (was convinced Cooper-while-stuck-in-Doug-E would be killed for shock value) and how ridiculous it seems in retrospect, but my appreciation is wholly undiminished.

Did anybody ever consider Kyle for a DICK TRACY project? Or think of casting him as Robert Vaughn's son? Back when my chin still had incredible definition, I sometimes wondered if I was actually Vaughn's son. My mom often mentioned that when she was a stewardess for Western, he was practically the only gentleman among the celebrities she had to deal with. 'the less you know' ... right?

As for Kyle McLachlan, I don't know why he didn't appear in more high profile movies. He seemed to be the go to person for Lynch though at times and a staple of several tv shows.

This story sounds weird to me. If you can't tell a story in the writer's room, where can you tell it?

Also, looks like I am going to be liquidating a lot of books and dvds soon (the rare and semi-rare ones, anyway.) I'll try to give you guys a heads-up, as most of them are cinematography & VFX-related: signed LYDECKER BROS book, signed FIRE IN THE SKY book, the VISIONS OF LIGHT DVD, probably a KUBRICK ltd ed coll box of blu-rays, Lebbeus Woods and Syd Mead art, a nice vinyl of NORTH BY NORTHWEST and maybe a couple dozen others, depending on how much I'm crying over losing the stuff -- like GROOVE TUBE and THE BIG BUS -- when I get round to listing on ebay. I'll have that toyspress CINEFEX book in there too, but this time, 15 years later, I won't be asking for $XXX.00.
