Vincent Frei at ArtofVfx talks to John Knoll about Rogue One:

http://www.artofvfx.com/rogue-one-a-sta ... ght-magic/

You can tell from reading this that Knoll had a lot of fun, and felt it was a privilege, making this film and the finished work is stamped with that same enthusiasm and excellence.

1697 full Vfx shots with a few hundred more "fix it in post" ones added onto that.

Star Wars: Rogue One leads the 2016 VES awards with 7 nominations.

Doctor Strange followed next with 6 nods along with Kubo and the Two Strings. Deepwater Horizon, and Silence also scored nominations.

ILM alum Ken Ralston is this year's recipient of the VES Lifetime Achievement Award. Very well deserved.

ILM was also nominated by the BAFTAs for their vfx work for Star Wars: Rogue One and Doctor Strange.

Oh my God ILM! The Hammerhead crew survives their suicide mission in space only to jettison down to the surface of Scarif in time to witness the DS laser striking the planet's ocean, thus sealing their doom!

John Knoll has even envisioned their demise.

Make this movie now!

Finally this third part has been released ! But the article is worth the time. So they had to simulate digital clothes for Leia, does it mean she is all CG? Or they only put the cg face on the body of the actress, like they did with Tarkin?

I know they used a stand in for Leia on set but I'm not sure what the final comp consisted of. I've read that the Leia's hands were the stand ins as well as from the neck down. There's just not enough information to say definitively. Either way, it's a amazing attempt that comes this [] close to nailing it. But, there was still something a bit off in her face when she was speaking. It's more successful than Tarkin overall…but some of that has to do with Leia's brief screen time. Tarkin was a bold in-your-face attempt on screen for stretches. It sailed high sometimes and then came up short others.

Quick behind the scenes look at some of the different vfx passes done to complete Jedha and Scarif for R1.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLoP7moOG-M

I do wish these videos consisted of more people though, perhaps even with just commentaries, about what is actually being done.

These little videos are great at showing the different passes and layers that are built up to create finished shots but they don't really delve into who is doing it and what is actually being done.

Jedha's destruction is one of my favourite sequences from a vfx point of view and it contains one of my favourite shots of the entire movie: when the spaceship lands and the rebels enter in it. Really seamless compositing work.

That's a tremendous shot along with one on Scarif when the rebel ship lands outside the bunker and they run outside to it. We might have commented here but it looked like they had a full scale set piece built and just lowered it on set somehow. But it looks like it was CG too. Terrific work.

studio daily's Barbara Robertson talks to John Knoll about R1. There's some different types of questions asked and some new information to be gleaned from Knoll's answers than past interviews. Talks about roto and the model parts library.

I like that Knoll also mentioned the eleven(!) other vendors, including Atomic Fiction, Whiskytree, Ghost, etc.

Good stuff.
